This Bag Belonged to Gabrielle Chanel

Matthieu Blazy's Spring/Summer 2027 show for Chanel began and ended with the same model carrying the founder's own 2.55, out of the house archive. Unfolded: what the 2.55 is, how it is built, and why her actual bag matters on that runway.

How
Diamond quilting, a flat chain slipped through two eyelets, and a rectangular turnlock the house calls the Mademoiselle.
Why

Start with the first look. Chanel, Spring/Summer 2027, Matthieu Blazy’s collection. The model Dyanira Hurbuscher walks out in white, and in her hand is a black quilted bag on a gold chain. Not a new one. According to the house’s own show notes, it is Gabrielle Chanel’s own 2.55, taken out of the Patrimoine archives.

Our read, early: Blazy starts with her and ends with her. Everything in between is his answer.

First look, last look

The bag does not stay a one-off. The show notes say the collection “returns to it at the end, worn by the same model.” In the runway photos, that is Look 83, the last of the show: Hurbuscher again, now in black smocked tweed, the same bag in her hand.

Why it is called 2.55

The name is a date. The house’s own timeline says Gabrielle Chanel created the quilted bag with a gold chain in 1955 and called it the 2.55, “named after its date of creation.” The house film on its vocabulary of fashion puts the month on it: February 1955. Two, for February. Fifty five, for the year.

The reason was practical. The house quotes her: “Tired of carrying my bags by hand and losing them, I slipped a strap over them and slipped them over my shoulder.” A bag on a chain left her hands free.

There was a bag before the bag. The same house film says she drew on men’s military satchels with straps, and first remade them in jersey lined with grosgrain. The 2.55 is what that idea became in leather.

How it is built

Every detail on the 2.55 has a job, and the house lists them.

  • The quilting. A diamond pattern, which the house says she gave the bag “for improved wear and comfort.”
  • The chain. A flat link chain, interlaced and “slipped through two eyelets.” Look at the close up of Look 83 above: the chain runs through metal rings at the top corners, with leather woven between the links.
  • The lock. A rectangular turnlock called the Mademoiselle, the house’s name for its founder. The interlocking double C lock most people picture came later; on the 2.55 it is the Mademoiselle.
  • Inside. A burgundy lining and a double C stamped inside. You cannot see either on the runway, so take the house’s word for it.
  • The sewing. The house says the 2.55 is “sewn like a garment, from the inside out.” The house calls it a couturière’s handbag.

You will often read that the quilting copies the jackets of jockeys at the races, and that the burgundy lining remembers the uniforms at the Aubazine orphanage where she grew up. Those stories are widely repeated, but the house pages we used do not state them, so treat them as legend.

Look closer

This is the detail that makes the bag. The leather on the flap is creased and the surface has lost its shine in places. This is not a reissue made to look old. The house says it was hers, and it looks it. The house does not say which year this particular bag was made, only that it belonged to Gabrielle Chanel.

Why it matters

Fashion houses quote their archives all the time: a reissued bag, a reprinted logo, a jacket “inspired by” the founder. Blazy did something plainer. He put the real thing in a model’s hand, twice, and set the whole collection between those two walks.

The show notes frame the collection as “his ongoing conversation with Gabrielle Chanel,” told in the order of her life, from the jersey underwear of her beginnings to her postwar suit. In that story the bag is the signature at the bottom of the page. As Blazy puts it in the notes: “This is not a historical collection; it’s a collection about Gabrielle Chanel’s layered stories.”

A copy says we remember her. The original says she is still in the room. And with the chain on her shoulder and both hands free, the bag sits where a practical woman wants it: at the hip, well above the fold.

So, honestly: Look 1 in white, or Look 83 in black tweed? Which one wore her bag better?
